The Men’s Health Caucus (MHC) concluded a fantastic presence at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in San Francisco. This year the MHC featured over 29 men’s health research presentations at 6 scientific sessions and a poster session, covering topics from fatherhood to HPV in boys to implementation of the Affordable Care Act and its impact on men’s health.
Ana Fadich, MPH, Program Planner for the Caucus shared, “With over 85 research abstracts submitted, representing the work of over 350 researchers, it was hard to narrow down which of the quality submissions to choose to present at this year’s meeting. I am so pleased with the quality and outcome of this year’s presentations and think we have set the stage for the 2013 Annual Meeting in Boston whose theme is Think Global Act Local.”
Outgoing Chair of the MHC, Scott Williams, MPA, stated, “With standing room only at most of our scientific sessions, it is evident that the disparities of the health of men and boys in our country is becoming a priority for more public health experts.”
The MHC was also had the opportunity to partner with the Women’s Health Caucus to host a joint session titled, “Are women from Venus and men from Mars when it comes to delivering effective health messages?” The session examined how best to develop health and wellness communications outreach, keeping in mind, the different needs and preferences of women and men.
Incoming Chair of the Caucus Salvatore Giorgianni, PharmD observed, “I am privileged to lead the Men’s Health Caucus for the next two years and look forward to continuing the growth and success that we have already set in motion in our two year existence.”
The Men’s Health Caucus is announcing that you may now submit abstracts for the 2012 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting.

At the 2011 APHA Annual Meeting the Men’s Health Caucus was pleased to announce the debut of the 2011-2012 Men’s Health National Policy Agenda. This is a first of it’s kind document in the United States. This document highlights the key vision, principles, goals and priorities of the MHC, and stands as the policy standard for improving the health and well?being of men and boys in our country. We encourage you to share this agenda with your colleagues, leadership at your respective organizations, as well as your elected officials. This is a living document that will be updated as new national issues arise.

The New York Times recently published an article titled Men in Grief Seek Others Who Mourn as They Do highlighting the way in which men experience grief and how they go about seeking help during that time.
Our own Men’s Health Caucus chairman-elect, Sal Giorgianni wrote a letter to the editor in reply to story which was recently published as well. The text of his letter can be found below:
Providing health care communications and services in a manner consistent with the sociocultural underpinnings of men and boys is of paramount importance in both connecting with patients and motivating them to take care of themselves when the doctor is not looking.The American Public Health Association has recognized the need to explore ways to better provide boys and men with education and services that will address the unique problems they face and do so in a way that is gender- and life-cycle appropriate. Articles like this one help underscore just how important it is to do this.
